Marshall Laing Primary School has a long and proud past of serving the Lynfield / Mount Roskill community and delivering inspirational learning for all of our learners. We are proud to have students from many different nationalities, which reflects the rich cultural diversity of our area. As a school we value and recognise each other’s cultural heritage and work hard to develop a sense of belonging for all students. Marshall Laing students are articulate, caring and respectful, displaying a strong sense of citizenship. We are all very proud of our school as we work together with our families to maximize learning for all our students so that they reach their optimum level of achievement and social development.
We are a forward-thinking centre of learning that aims to teach children how to find knowledge, how to be adaptable and flexible, how to find their niche, how to be resilient and how to collaborate. Our goal is for students to leave our school with a love for learning and a strong sense of curiosity.
Opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom are plentiful and diverse. Children’s learning is supported by high quality teaching, well resourced classrooms, and specialist part time teachers for Visual Art, te reo Māori and kapa haka and Science. The Arts, sports and culture are valued and are an integral part of our varied programme. The school has excellent facilities including a heated swimming pool, large playing fields including an all weather Tiger turf, two all weather adventure playgrounds and two hard court areas, one of which will be covered later this year.
The school recognises the importance of children being healthy and provides many different opportunities for the students to be physically active. A recent acquisition to the school is a 300m asphalt bike path and a fleet of 50 bikes which allows our children to learn to ride and keep fit. Marshall Laing aims to teach children resilience and perseverance and there is no better way to encourage this than by learning to ride a bike.
The school is part of the Roskill Sports cluster which organises 12 different sporting competitions during the year and also provides for specialist sports teachers to come into the school to provide specific coaching. The school also enters the local Saturday netball and Sunday flippa ball competitions.
The school is also the site of the Marshall Laing Music School where on Saturday mornings over 450 children from our local community learn an instrument with the lesson cost subsidised by the Ministry of Education. Music lessons also take place after school thus providing Marshall Laing students with many opportunities to learn a musical instrument.
We are all very proud of our school as we work together with our families to maximize learning for all our students so that they reach their potential and fulfill the school motto of ‘Make them proud – who follow’.
